I have had cancer four times in the past ten years beginning in the spring of 2003. I am in the midst of chemotherapy today. As I retrace the steps of my journey with cancer I feel emotional. Emotions are something I seldom allow myself to indulge in. I have been treated with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. I am, frankly, amazed at my stamina.
In the beginning, I stayed home most of the time. I was low on energy, but mainly I hated the way I looked – no hair, no eyebrows, no eyelashes, etc. When I finally became aware that support groups were available, especially the Turning Heads Project, everything changed. I was no longer alone. Together we could cry, laugh, get together creatively, find ways to face the world. In gentle peace and harmony we five worked together, a quintet, each playing her part perfectly to the inclusion and success of the photo shoot. The pictures are beautiful. Thank you for including me.
I’m really OKAY today with my appearance and go everywhere with or without all the covering accoutrements.
